Late Night Koo-Koo Craziness...

So, I had not really planned to say anything about the big Tonight Show brouhaha going on over at NBC. Mostly because I don't think I have anything new to bring to the table.

I'm a Letterman fan, but this whole thing is a royal screwing of Conan O'Brien, and if Leno did not orchestrate it, he certainly doesn't seem to be doing anything to stop it, either.Never been much of a Leno fan, at least not since he had his funny removed and took over the Tonight Show.

I thought Conan's letter on the subject was quite eloquent and addressed the situation perfectly.

And here's a great quote from Conan as well:

"And I just want to say to the kids out there watching: You can do anything you want in life," he said. "Unless Jay Leno wants to do it, too."

See, not much fresh or new. But then I read something that struck me as a little odd, and I needed to mention it.
I was at one of the "I'm With Conan" or I'm With Coco" or whatever groups, and they had a link to a People magazine poll as to which Late Night Talk Show Host Is Your Favorite, and Conan was slightly ahead of Leno, with Letterman far behind. So, for some reason, I decided to look at the comments, and there was some guy who was a big Jay Leno fan, and sadi he was glad he moved top England, because Americans have no taste. Whatever. And there were then of course the people responding to him in very mature fashion. But one guy listed the great(most famous) American comedians. Here is his list:

Andy Kaufman
Andrew Dice Clay
Bill Cosby
Bob Newhart
Chris Rock
David Chappelle
David Cross
Eddie Murphy

Is it just me, or does one name on that list really jump out in a "one of these things is not like the other" way ? I mean, it's an odd list, but I suspect that a lot of lists of people's favorite comedians would be odd and varied(I think I see another blog post on the horizon, a LIST no less, oooh!), but, and again, maybe this is just me, but doesn't Dice Clay sort of stand out like a sore thumb on that list ? I think it wouldn't be so odd if like Carrot Top was on the list too, but i think the fact it's just Dice with these other guys seems odd.

Whaddya think ? Am I just being a dick on this one ?

I've never been a big fan of Dice, but back in the day (mid-late 80's) he was HUGE. He was selling out sports arenas for his comedy show. No one ever did that before and rarely since. Even Eddie Murphy didn't do arena tours like Dice He was a legend. And a douche. I guess you could have it both ways.

But to me the name that jumps off that list is David Cross. I think he is funny, but he's not the superstar that the rest of the comedians listed are/were.

PS - And I've always hated Andy Kaufman. Never thought he was funny. Even as Latka. Ugh.

Earl- Yeah, I didn't really think about it from that angle. I guess I was looking more at "level" of comedy, which is not what the guy was talking about, I guess. Just forcing my own agenda, and I don't even know what that agenda was...I don't really have strong anti-Dice feelings anyway.(I thought he was pretty funny in Making the Grade and Pretty In Pink) I guess I just wanted to run my mouth.
Hmm. I guess I'm the douche.

I am a big Kaufman fan, too. Think those are connected ?
