What do you want me to do...?

"Box Of Rain"- Grateful Dead ( American Beauty- 1970-arguably the greatest GD album there is-featured in the final episode of "Freaks & Geeks", in which one of the characters has this to say about "American Beauty"-- "I sometimes wish that I had never heard it, just so I could hear it for the first time"(praraphrased, I admit)

I know what you're saying: "Holy Christ, he's on that Grateful Dead tree-huggng hippie crap crusade again"...well, I guess I am...but this is maybe the greatest song ever...this is the one that I have to hear whenever the demons are rearing their ugly heads(something they like to do A LOT- the demons are NOT lazy fuckers, I'll tell you that, they like to get biz-zay in that noggin of mine)...have you heard it ? You should...hell, I'll lend it to you if you want...it's also available on Itunes, and if you don't like it, I'll reimburse you the dollar- that's how great I think the song is...this tune has been the recipient of the RPT button COUNTLESS times, before cd's I probably went through a few taped copies of it with the old play>rewind>play>rewind>play...you get the picture...anyway, I got some demons to chase...so I'm gonna continue listening to the song...you should too, demons or not...give it a listen, and TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK !!

BOX OF RAIN

Look out of any window
any morning, any evening , any day
Maybe the sun is shining
birds are winging or
rain is falling from a heavy sky-
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through ?
For this is all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago

Walk out of any doorway
feel your way, feel your way
like the day before
Maybe you'll find direction
around some corner
where it's been waiting to meet you-
What do you want me to do,
to watch for you while you're sleeping ?
Well, please don't be surprised
when you find me dreaming, too

Look into any eyes
you find by you, you can see
clear through to another day
I know it's been seen before
through other eyes on other days
while going home-
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through ?
It's all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago

Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
to another land
Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted
with words half spoken
and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
to do for you to see you through ?
A box of rain will ease the pain
and love will see you through

Just a box of rain
wind and water
believe it if you need it
If you don't just pass it on
Sun and shower, wind and rain
In and out the window
Like a moth before a flame

And it's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
or leave it if you dare
And it's just a box of rain
or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long, long time to be gone
and a short time to be there
- Robert Hunter & Phil Lesh

I'm with you, Pat. It's an excellent song, one of the best. And I know this even though I haven't heard it for many years.

Top 5 songs I wish I had never heard so that I could hear them for the first time (this doesn't necessarily mean they are great songs, but the first listen was the best!):

1. Let It Be - The Beatles
2. Baba O'Reilly - The Who
3. Amelia - Joni Mitchell
4. Don't Stop Now - GBV
5. Bolero - Ravel

OK...I take it back. These are all GREAT songs.
