It Was 24 Years(and 2 Days) Ago Today...
That I saw my first Grateful Dead concert(Were you there? I think I remember seeing you)...And things ain't been the same since, which I think is a pretty good thing.

It's Merely Rock and/or Roll, But I Am Fond Of It....
Or something like that, I think the Roller Stones once said. and I wholheartedly agree. Check this tune out:
Pretty good, huh? It's a band called Middle Brother ,which consists of members of the bands Deer Tick, Dawes and Delta Spirit. I am a big,big fan of Deer Tick(as those of you that read this blog regularly are probably aware), but I have never really listened to the other two bands. Though after a couple of spins of Middle Brother's self titled debut, I am aiming to change that. I like these guys. Simple, straightforward rock 'n' roll...What's wrong with that?

Eddie Money?
So, yesterday, one of my friends made a disparaging remark about Eddie Money(actually, about the pain of having Eddie Money lyrics trapped in one's head). I did not necessarily feel the need to jump to Eddie's defense(though i did point out that there are worse things, such as the lyrics to "Can't Fight This Feeling"), but it did get me thinking a bit about Eddie Money, and I found that I actually really dig a couple of his tunes.
What's that? You would like it very much if I posted a few of them here? Well, I think that can be arranged:
I remember arguing with my brother because I was convinced that the girl in this video was Apollonia(of Apollonoa 6 and Purple Rain fame), but he told me I was crazy. But now, years and thousands of research dollars later, i find out that I WAS correct! That woman IS Apollonia!!
See? Eddie was also a visionary...He saw the whole vampire craze thing 30 years ago!!
And how can one argue with Ronnie Spector?

Tired & Bloated...Hows About A Video?
Alright, I am still tired and bloated from a great first night of Hannukah feast prepared by My Special Lady and shared with some great friends, so I am going to share a video combining two things I love- Comedy & Music.
What you have below is a bit from SCTV back in 1984. Dave Thomas as Walter Cronkite and Rick Moranis as David Brinkley reporting on a shuttle launch, and they seem to have musician Robert Gordon confused with an astronaut named Gordon Cooper. Then Robert plays a great version of Marshall Crenshaw's tune "Someday Someway"... Hope you enjoy it!

Can I Hear That Again?
Those of you that read this that have known me outside of the interweb are probably aware of my proclivity for repetition when it comes to music. Yep, I'm the guy who used to wear out cassette tapes if there was one particular song on it that I really, REALLY liked. I distinctly remember it happening with my copy of Tom Petty & the Heatrtbreaker's "Long After Dark"...the song in question ? "Change of Heart. LOVED that tune...Still do. of course, The destruction of the tapes ceased with the advent of the cee dee( and now the iPod).
Some songs have a short life in this obsessive listening, others keep coming back, again and again.
Now, this is not a complete compulsion...For the most part, I will not subject other people to this "personality trait", at least not in it's purest form(the repetition of one song over and over). Sure, sometimes My Special Lady has to put up with it, but that was in the contract...She's locked in.
Sometimes people might be indirectly subjected to it. I'm pretty sure I annoyed some roommates in college(I'm pretty sure I listened to the "Hair" soundtrack for about a week straight in my dorm), maybe some neighbors, and almost definitely people who have worked near me in offices.
Sometimes people are subjected to it on a slightly wider scale...I might create a mix(or a "playlist" as they are now called) and if you are around me a lot, you may hear that playlist A LOT, but it will often be 1 100 songs or so, so the repetition isn't quite as acute.
Why am I telling you all this ? Because something is happening, and I think there are two possible reasons( and they are not mutually exclusive)...First, I will share with you what is happening...MY four and half year old daughters do this as well. We will hear a song, and they will want to hear it again, and again, and again, and again, and again...
And I figure this means one or both of these things are correct...
1. I am karmicly paying for my annoyance of other people with my repetitiveness.
2. This is some sort of genetic anomaly that I have passed on to my children.

Fuck VH1 And That 80's Horse They Rode in On !!!
Over the long Billie Jean King holiday weekend, I watched the VH1 marathon of the 100 Greatest Songs Of the 80's(Which i apparently missed when it aired originally in 2006). 5 hours of my life.
Now, I realize that part of the point of these lists is to spark conversation and argument and such, but some of the shit on this list is ridiculous. This is further proof why the American people shouldn't be allowed to vote for anything( For other examples, see the White House and the people voted version of Monopoly-what a fucking train wreck that thing is !) Let's run down the list, shall we ?
100 Loverboy / "Working for the Weekend" 1981-Good start-great prototypical 80's tune.
99 Wang Chung / "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" 1986 -Irritating song, but unavoidable- okay.
98 Bobby Brown / "My Perogative" 1988 -Meh, whatever.

What songs do YOU think should/should not be on the list ?
Now, I realize that part of the point of these lists is to spark conversation and argument and such, but some of the shit on this list is ridiculous. This is further proof why the American people shouldn't be allowed to vote for anything( For other examples, see the White House and the people voted version of Monopoly-what a fucking train wreck that thing is !) Let's run down the list, shall we ?

99 Wang Chung / "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" 1986 -Irritating song, but unavoidable- okay.

01 Bon Jovi / "Livin' on a Prayer" 1986- Huh ? What ? Did Bon Fucking Jovi sleep with EVERYONE who voted ? This song "Sucks rope." to quote George the Handyman from "Newhart". First of all, IF Bon Jovi is to have a song on this list(and that's a large IF) it would have to be "You Give Love a Bad Name", wouldn't it ? And it should be somewhere in the '60's, I would think. Or maybe "Wanted Dead or Alive".
This is simply a disgrace. Ridiculous.

"There's A Bathroom On the Right..."
The title of this post is a misheard lyric from a Wayne's World skit.
The actual lyric(from "Bad Moon Rising") is "There's a bad moon on the rise", but Wayne and Garth had it on their Top Ten List of Misheard lyrics.
For some reason, this came up the other day(segue anyone?), and it got me thinking about lyrics I have misheard in my life. And then i thought, Why hell, that sounds like a blogpost, don't it ?
No ? Well, I'm gonna make it one anyway.
As soon as I started trying to remember misheard lyrics, I of course could only think of a few. Though I am quite sure there have been hundreds.
"A broken nose with laughing eyes"
This is one of my all time favorites.(I think I might actually have written about this before) It's from "Bringing On The Heartbreak" by Def Leppard, and the actual lyric is: "a broken rose with laughing eyes", which of course makes a helluva lot more sense. I never could quite figure out why this woman would have a broken nose and laughing eyes.
"He's dancing with the chicken slacks"
This one is from "Twisting The Night Away" by Sam Cooke. The actual lyric is "He's dancing with a chick IN slacks". Again, makes a whole lot more sense. But what did I know ? I mean girls wore poodle skirts, so I thought this gentleman just happened to be wearing pants that were known as "chicken slacks". It was the '60's.
"Our nation burns a glory as to you"
Now this is the only one that I got "caught" singing. I remember being in the car with my oldest sister, and "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon & Garfunkel, is on the radio, and i sing "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio, our nation burns a glory as to you...Whoo-woo-woo" and my sister starts laughing at me. She might actually have pulled the car over. And she asks, "What did you just sing ?" and if you have ever been caught singing the wrong lyric, you instantly know you are wrong, but you also know that there is no way to figure out the right lyrics now. So, I tell her what I sang. Then she asked me what that means. And I say "Well, that they Nation burns for the glory days of the Yankees ?"
Of course, she started laughing again, and informed me that the actual lyric is "Our Nation turns it's lonely eyes to you". Which again, makes much more sense.
"Can't barely hear it."
This is from "The Same Old Song" by the Four Tops. And the real lyric is "Can't bear to hear it", which makes sense, because the whole song is about the pain of hearing a favorite song after you have broken up. But I of course, heard "Can't barely hear it", like the guy was LITERALLY having a hard time hearing the song, and I went so far as to picture this poor guy holding the radio close to his ear, but STILL not being able to hear the song.
That reminds me of another lyrical problem I have sometimes, misunderstanding the point of a particular lyric- i only have one example in my head at the moment, and it is from when I was a kid- It's from "Rhinestone Cowboy" by Glen Campbell(one of my all time favorite songs when I was 5 or 6. I remember we would visit my Grandfather in upstate New York every summer, and we would have to go to the laundromat, and they had a juke box, and I used to torture everyone there by playing "Rhinestone Cowboy", John Denver's"Rocky Mountain High" and Terry Jacks' "Seasons In The Sun" over and over and over and over again.) and it's the line "getting cards and letters from people I don't even know", which of course refers to fan mail, but I pictured this guy in his rhinestone cowboy hat going to get his mail, and looking at his cards and letters, and being confused because he didn't know who they were from.
Now these last two are lyrics that my friend Dave misheard, but he told me about them, and ever since, I can no longer hear the correct lyrics, now all I hear is what he told me he heard.
they are both Bob Marley songs.
"Because all that pizza is cold"
is from "Get Up Stand Up" and the real lyric is "It's not all that glitters is gold", but I will forever now think that ole Bob is complaining about cold pizza in the middle of this rebellious song.
"Hey Sanchez"
is from "Could You Be Loved", and it's the refrain at the end of the song, when he sings "Say something" over an over, but I will now forever hear "Hey Sanchez".
I also remeber my friend Chris thinking that the line "There's a fear down here we can't forget" from "Throwing Stones" by the Grateful Dead was "There's a BEER down here we can't forget"
And one last one, I remember seeing a satndup comic talking about misheard lyrics,and he mentioned thinking that Steve Miller was singing "Bingo Jed had a light on" instead of "big old jet airliner"

Music Thingy
Here's a music question thingy I stoled from Stephanie.
Of all the bands & artists in your collection, of which one do you own the most albums? The Grateful Dead- by a lot. Between the 36 Volumes of Dick's Picks, and the downloaded stuff(not to mention the studio stuff and the other "official" live recordings), I might be in the hundreds. Obsessive ? Not me.
* What was the last song you listened to? Not Dark Yet- Bob Dylan
* What’s in your CD player right now? In The cd player in our living room has 5 cd's of songs I put together that my twins might like to dance to, my personal music is on an IPod, I'm currently listening to a playlist called "Don't Harsh My Mellow"
* What are your favorite instruments? The keytar...Kidding. I guess I'm a guitar guy.
* Who’s your favorite local artist/band? We live in Florida now, Tom Petty is originally from here, does that count ?
* What was the last show you attended? Bob Dylan & Merle Haggard in Chicago.
* What was the greatest show you’ve ever been to? the Jerry Garcia Band at the Lunt-Fontaine Theater on Broadway in NYC.

* What’s the worst band you’ve ever seen in concert? 10,000 Maniacs- very boring. the only highlight was Natalie Merchant playing a solo piano version of "Verdi Cries", and slamming her hands down on the keys and saying "Good night" when someone yelled out "Peace Train" !!
* What band do you love musically but hate the members of? Definitely the River Bottom Nightmare Band- those guys were jerks, but they rocked that talent show and beat Emmit Otter's Jug Band fair and square.
* What is the most musically involved you have ever been? Drunkenly reciting my "poetry" over a guitar and bass at a party.
* What show are you looking forward to? I hear that Phil is on the mend and might be touring this summer, if he decides to come anywhere near here, that would be nice.
* What is your favorite band shirt? I had this BRIGHT orange tie-dye of a skeleton surfing on the state of California that I wore until it fell apart. Currently, I have a shirt that has a Grateful Dead Steal Your face logo with a NY Mets symbol in the middle.
* What musician would you like to hang out with for a day? Jerome John Garcia.
* What musician would you like to be in love with you for a day? Liz Phair
* What was your last musical “phase” before you wised up? I don't know that I ever "wised up".
* Sabbath or solo Ozzy? Is this even a question ? Black Sabbath
* Did you know that filling out this meme makes you a music geek? I don't think filling this out made me a music geek. I think I've been a music geek for a very long time, and I'm okay with that.
* What was the greatest decade for music? The 70's- a great period for the Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan,some criminally underrated Stones music-it wasn't all disco.
* What is your favorite movie soundtrack? The Harder They Come
* Who is your favorite artist who is much better live than on a recording? It's almost a cliche now, but the Grateful Dead. Though I am one who actually enjoys their studio work quite a bit, nothing compares to hearing the boys live.
* Do you have a hidden desire to be a popular musician? Of course.
* Have you ever used drugs to enhance the music experience? How else can you find a way to enjoy "Dark Star" coming out of only one speaker ?

* What’s the worst band you’ve ever seen in concert? 10,000 Maniacs- very boring. the only highlight was Natalie Merchant playing a solo piano version of "Verdi Cries", and slamming her hands down on the keys and saying "Good night" when someone yelled out "Peace Train" !!
* What band do you love musically but hate the members of? Definitely the River Bottom Nightmare Band- those guys were jerks, but they rocked that talent show and beat Emmit Otter's Jug Band fair and square.
* What is the most musically involved you have ever been? Drunkenly reciting my "poetry" over a guitar and bass at a party.
* What show are you looking forward to? I hear that Phil is on the mend and might be touring this summer, if he decides to come anywhere near here, that would be nice.
* What is your favorite band shirt? I had this BRIGHT orange tie-dye of a skeleton surfing on the state of California that I wore until it fell apart. Currently, I have a shirt that has a Grateful Dead Steal Your face logo with a NY Mets symbol in the middle.
* What musician would you like to hang out with for a day? Jerome John Garcia.
* What musician would you like to be in love with you for a day? Liz Phair
* What was your last musical “phase” before you wised up? I don't know that I ever "wised up".
* Sabbath or solo Ozzy? Is this even a question ? Black Sabbath
* Did you know that filling out this meme makes you a music geek? I don't think filling this out made me a music geek. I think I've been a music geek for a very long time, and I'm okay with that.
* What was the greatest decade for music? The 70's- a great period for the Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan,some criminally underrated Stones music-it wasn't all disco.
* What is your favorite movie soundtrack? The Harder They Come
* Who is your favorite artist who is much better live than on a recording? It's almost a cliche now, but the Grateful Dead. Though I am one who actually enjoys their studio work quite a bit, nothing compares to hearing the boys live.
* Do you have a hidden desire to be a popular musician? Of course.
* Have you ever used drugs to enhance the music experience? How else can you find a way to enjoy "Dark Star" coming out of only one speaker ?
* What was the last song you heard that gave you a chill? I think That would be "Over Yonder(Jonathon's Song)" by Steve Earle- It's about a guy who's going to be executed. This part always gets me

Spinning The Hot Discs....
I saw this Music list thing( I must say, I don't like the word Meme, I'm also not a big fan of the whole LOL, ROFLMAO,FYKMA thing either, while I'm stating things I'm not fond of) over at Avitable's, and while I am not savvy enough to put up links, I figure I can share 7 songs I am currently "digging", you know ? Can you dig it ? I knew that you could.
1. Rise Up With Fists!!- Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins- I listen to it over and over and over and over and over again.
The video, is pretty funny, too, and Jenny and the Watson Twins are not tough on the eyes, if you know what I'm saying.
2. Don't Need Love- Grateful Dead- An unreleased song that I have a live recording of from the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA on July 15th 1984. It's a Brent song, and I love it. i had a copy of about half of this performance on an audiocassette from "The Deadhead Hour" when I was in high school. I fell asleep while listening to the show, and when I woke up, that tape had ended, and I quickly flipped it to get a chunk of the song.
3. Smile- Lily Allen- Wow, something relatively new !! She's a singer/songwriter(I think) from England. This song has this light, poppy sound, but it's kinda mean when you listen to the lyrics.
4. Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You- Bob Dylan- A live version from the Bootleg series , from his Rolling Thuinder Revue Tour, which I think was 1975. A song I never really had any use for until I heard this version.
5. That's Enertainment-The Jam- Great song that i rediscovered when they used it in "Stranger Than Fiction"
6.More Than A Feeling- Boston- R.I.P., Brad Delp.
7. Brown Eyed Women-Grateful Dead- a live version from Dick's Picks Volume 21: 11/1/85 at the Richmond Coliseum, Richmond, VA. A great version of one of my ALL-TIME favorite Dead tunes. i lstened to it 4 times in a row on the way home from work the other day, and only stopped at 4 because I arrived at home. I love the way Jerry sings "Raised 8 boys, only I turned bad" on this one.
